Instead of general experience, each of your 9 stats will naturally increase through use in battle.
If you take a lot of hard and direct hits, you will become more resilient, become constantly adept at dodging attacks, and increase your evasion level.
You will use your favorite type of weapon enough and become more efficient at it; dealing more damage and costing less guard.
