Professor Remus John Lupin, also known as Moony, was a half-blood wizard and the only son of Lyall and Hope Lupin.

He was attacked by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback as a child as a result of Greyback's revenge against Lyall, leaving Remus with lycanthropy for life.

During his school years he was one of the Marauders, being best friends with Sirius Black, James Potter and Peter Pettigrew.
