Sai Yamanaka is the head Anbu of the Yamanaka clan in Konohagakure. Before that, he was a member of Root.

According to standard Root training, Sai was conditioned to suppress all emotions and as such had difficulty connecting with others.

When added to Kakashi's team as a replacement for Sasuke Uchiha, Sai begins to learn more about people's feelings and tries to develop his personality and identity.
