Yu-Gi-Oh! tells the story of Yugi Mutou, a shy boy who loves all kinds of games, but who is often bullied. One day, he solves an ancient puzzle known as the Millennium Puzzle, which causes his body to house a mysterious spirit with the personality of a player.

From then on, whenever Yugi or one of his friends is threatened by those with darkness at heart, this other Yugi shows up and challenges them to dangerous Shadow Games that reveal the true nature of one's heart, the losers of these contests often being subject to a punishment called the Feather Game.
